Ashley's Diary

Friday on the East Bank Sundeck

Rooftop Cocktails at East Bank With Whitney and Caroline, or: The Sundeck Hierarchy Explained
The Diary · Filed by the Editorial Committee

Whitney had our towels arranged when Caroline and I joined her on the East Bank sundeck Friday. She likes the same corner every time. So do I, particularly when she gets there first.

Caroline came straight from the Loop with a stapled agenda. We let her go through the committee items while Whitney ordered drinks. It was a beautiful evening, and I was willing to discuss quite a lot as long as we could stay outside.

We recognized two aldermanic staffers by the pool. There was also a man swimming laps with a headset, conducting what sounded like a conference call. I couldn't work out whether the people on the other end knew he was swimming. A woman nearby was reading a hardcover with its dust jacket still on. Caroline worried about the water. Whitney thought she had brought it to be seen with, but I hadn't heard of the book and couldn't help.

We stayed past eight. Caroline took her agenda home, and we had actually got through most of it.
