I got to Green City Market at 7:40 on Wednesday, which I thought was quite good until I saw the women already leaving with full bags. Several were in walking clothes. I really should combine the two.
I wanted garlic scapes, sungolds, bread and a bunch of dill. I always dry the dill and then forget to use it, but it is lovely in the kitchen while I still have plans for it.
There was one basket of scapes left. A woman in a linen jumpsuit reached it before I did. I hadn't seen her at the market before; she had a tote from a bookstore in Denver. I explained to the farmer that I had been buying his scapes for ages, including the summer his truck broke down, when I told everyone they were worth waiting for.
He said it was first come, first served, and continued weighing her chard. I had hoped he would at least remember the truck.
I bought my dill at the next stall. It was excellent. Next week I'll go earlier, although I am not moving Pilates for garlic.
