We spent the Fourth at the lake house. The drive took two hours and ten minutes. Carol Hendrickson says she can do it in ninety, but she also has three camera tickets outstanding in Fontana, so I am comfortable with our time.
We put flag bunting on the pier and had the usual discussion about whether it looked festive or like a car dealership. Saturday's cheese board was lovely. By Sunday we were putting the little flag toothpicks into supermarket brie. We also had supermarket everything-bagels, which are perfectly satisfactory at the lake.
Our neighbor's grandson was trying to hand a soft pretzel from the Streblow to a girl from Williams Bay when he steered into the mailboat's path. The mail jumper caught the pretzel. The Streblow was scratched, and everyone suddenly had advice about boats.
I hear the repair is going to be about eleven thousand dollars. The girl is now his girlfriend. I don't know whether she ever got another pretzel.
We closed the house Monday. I left the bunting up because it really did look pretty from the water.
