A Question Over Dessert at Alinea

Dinner at Alinea, Where the Dessert Was Thrown at the Table and So Was a Question
The Diary · Filed by the Editorial Committee

Jonathan and I went to Alinea for our anniversary. It is close enough that we really ought to go more often, although I like having a reason to make an evening of it.

There were eighteen courses. Something I had taken for the centerpiece turned out to be soup, and it was my favorite part. We also had the green-apple balloon. Jonathan's voice changed after the helium, and we both had trouble keeping straight faces when the next course arrived.

During the dessert they prepare directly on the table, he asked whether we should sell the lake house. I had a spoon in my hand and someone was still arranging chocolate in front of us.

I said we weren't discussing it over that dessert. I wanted to finish dinner, and it is a house where we have spent a great many Fourths of July. He said he had only meant to raise the question.

We talked about it in the car for eleven minutes. Nothing is decided. I would happily have the balloon again.
