Lunch at Marshall Field's

It Is Called Marshall Field's, the Restaurant Is the Walnut Room, and I Will Not Be Taking Questions
The Diary · Filed by the Editorial Committee

I went to State Street for lunch at the Walnut Room. There was no particular errand. Sometimes I want to see the clock and the Tiffany dome and have the chicken pot pie, and that is enough of a plan.

At the cosmetics counter, a lovely young woman welcomed me to Macy's. I thanked her and said I was always happy to be at Marshall Field's. She smiled and told me her grandmother calls it that too.

Her grandmother and I would probably have a pleasant lunch. I still have the green shopping bags folded in a closet, and I don't use them for returns anywhere else.

There is no tree in August, of course, but the room is still lovely. I bought Frango mints afterward. I miss the idea of them being made upstairs on the thirteenth floor, although it hasn't prevented me from buying a box.
