Deb and the City-County Building

The City-County Building Is One Building, and I Am Prepared to Die on Its Granite Steps
The Diary · Filed by the Editorial Committee

During jury duty at the Daley Center I had lunch with three other jurors. One of them said she needed to go to the County Building, the one by City Hall. I said they were two halves of the same building. I may have said it rather promptly.

The block is bounded by LaSalle, Randolph, Clark and Washington. City Hall is on the west side and the County Building on the east. I explained that you could walk between the two without going outside. Deb, who lives in Jefferson Park, wanted to see. We went over that afternoon. When we crossed the corridor she said, ‘I'll be damned.’ I was pleased. It is much easier to show someone than to keep describing entrances over lunch.

My grandmother called the whole place the Hall. I still find that perfectly useful, although I understand that it doesn't tell you which counter to stand at.

We finished jury service Thursday with a unanimous verdict. Deb and I are going to have coffee in November. She knows more about getting around downtown than her remark at lunch suggested.
