Jonathan's Birthday Present

I Am Buying Jonathan a Motorcycle, Which His Cardiologist and I Have Ranked Differently
The Diary · Filed by the Editorial Committee

Jonathan used to keep a photograph of a British racing green Triumph in his law-school locker. He still mentions the bike occasionally, usually as if he is commenting on the design. I found the photograph among his saved programs, between a Lyric Opera insert and our son's kindergarten graduation.

His birthday is this month. The dealer on Western had the modern version in the right green. I took the photograph in to compare it. There would have been very little point getting the wrong green.

I also called his cardiologist. I was expecting to have to explain myself, but he knew the Bonneville and was much less concerned than he had been about Jonathan's marathon idea. He suggested Sheridan Road in October. I hadn't expected him to supply an itinerary.

The bike is hidden in Dana's garage under a sheet. We started it once and immediately realized we should have opened the garage door first. We switched it off and opened everything. I won't be doing that again.

There are two helmets. Jonathan knows nothing about either of them, but the second one is for me.
