Before the First Snow

A Pre-Season Statement on Dibs, From a Woman With a Garage and Principles
The Diary · Filed by the Editorial Committee

The forecast has the first proper accumulation within two weeks, and I have already seen folding chairs waiting in gangways. Every winter someone asks why I have opinions about dibs when I have a heated garage. I think the garage allows me to be objective. I am never competing for the space.

If you've actually cleared a space to the pavement, I understand wanting to use it. A few scrapes around the driver's door don't seem sufficient. Once the street has been plowed curb to curb, the chairs should go back inside.

On our old block a man once used a child's rocking horse to hold a space. It stayed out for nine days. Even after the thaw, people avoided that spot. The horse was much more effective than a cone.

I also don't see how someone can claim a space they didn't clear in front of someone else's house. But moving the chair shouldn't lead to keyed cars, piles of snow or notes in plastic sleeves. Our old neighbors stopped inviting one man to the block party after he moved their cones. Years later he moved away without ever learning why. The rocking horse was eventually put away, but the neighbors kept that one going.
